How long at Nagoya Castle?

Two hours covers the palace, the walls and a garden at an easy pace. The order matters more than the time, because the palace door shuts at four.

Most visitors spend between 1.5 and 2 hours inside Nagoya Castle. With the keep closed, the time goes on the Honmaru Palace, the walk along the stone walls and moats, a garden, and perhaps the treasure museum. Add lunch on Kinshachi Yokocho and it becomes a comfortable half-day.

Below is a time budget for each part, the opening hours from the official site, and a route that starts at one gate and ends at the other so you never retrace your steps.

The quick answer

Plan 1.5 to 2 hours: about 45 minutes in the Honmaru Palace, 30 to 45 minutes on the walls, turrets and keep exterior, 20 minutes in the Ninomaru Garden, and 20 to 30 minutes in the treasure museum if you want it. The castle opens 9:00 to 16:30, with last palace entry at 16:00. Arrive at 9:00 for a quiet palace, enter at the East Gate and leave by the Main Gate.

How much time do you need at Nagoya Castle?

1.5 to 2 hours for the main sights. One hour is rushed; three hours lets you add the museum, a long garden stop and lunch at the gates.

Here is where the time goes, in walking order from the East Gate:

StopTimeWhy stop
East Gate to Ninomaru Garden15 to 20 minA lord's garden; best in autumn and spring
Honmaru: keep and shachihoko from outside15 to 20 minThe closed keep up close, the golden fish on the roof
Honmaru Palace40 to 50 minGold-leaf screens, cypress halls, the shogun's rooms
Walls, moats and turrets20 to 30 min1610 stonework, the southwest turret photo
Nishinomaru Okura treasure museum20 to 30 minOriginal palace paintings; optional
Kinshachi Yokocho at the Main Gate30 to 60 minLunch and snacks outside the gates

Without the museum and lunch, the total is a little under two hours. Our guide to what is open explains each part in more detail.

All of it in under three hours with a local guide, a food tasting on Kinshachi Yokocho included.

What time does Nagoya Castle open?

9:00. It closes at 16:30, the last ticket entry is 16:00, and the Honmaru Palace and treasure museum take their last visitors at 16:00 too.

The visitor page gives the same hours all year. The castle closes from 29 December to 1 January only, so Mondays and public holidays are normal days here, unlike many Nagoya museums.

Last entry, treasure museum16:00 (5 min from the Main Gate, 10 from the East Gate)
Grounds close16:30
Closed29 December to 1 January

During the spring festival in cherry blossom season the grounds have stayed open until 19:30 with evening lighting; in 2026 that ran to 5 April. The palace does not follow those late hours, so see it in daylight.

What is the best time of day to visit?

Right at 9:00. The palace is quiet, the light on the keep is good from the east, and you finish in time for an early lunch at the Main Gate.

Tour groups and school trips build up from mid-morning, and the palace corridors are narrow. At opening you can stand in the Jorakuden without a crowd behind you. Late afternoon is the other quiet window, but the 16:00 palace cut-off makes it tight: if you go then, do the palace first and the walls after.

Avoid arriving after 15:30 unless you only want the grounds. And if you want a free volunteer guide, the Aichi Goodwill Guides Network leaves both gates at 12:30, according to the official page.

What is the best route through Nagoya Castle grounds?

In at the East Gate, through the Ninomaru Garden to the Honmaru and palace, round the keep, out past the Nishinomaru museum to the Main Gate and Kinshachi Yokocho.

This route uses the subway at one end and the food street at the other:

  1. East Gate. Five minutes from exit 7 of Nagoyajo Station. Buy your ticket here.
  2. Ninomaru Garden. Turn right after the gate. The garden belonged to the Owari lords' later residence.
  3. Into the Honmaru. Cross into the inner compound, see the keep from its base, then queue for the palace.
  4. Honmaru Palace. Shoes off, bags in the free lockers, and around 45 minutes inside.
  5. Southwest turret and the inner moat. The best view of the walls and the keep together.
  6. Nishinomaru Okura museum. Five minutes before the Main Gate.
  7. Main Gate and Kinshachi Yokocho. The Yoshinao zone, with most shops open until about 17:30.

Reverse it if you arrive by Me-guru bus, which stops at the Main Gate. How to reach each gate is in getting to Nagoya Castle.

How long does the Honmaru Palace take?

About 40 to 50 minutes at a steady pace. Allow an hour if you read every panel or there is a queue at the entrance.

The palace has more than 30 rooms, and you see them in a single one-way loop: the Genkan with its tiger and leopard screens, the Omote-shoin where the first lord Tokugawa Yoshinao held audiences, the Taimenjo with its lacquer and gold-leaf ceiling, and finally the Jorakuden, built for the shogun Iemitsu in 1634 and the richest room of all.

Practical things from the official rules: no flash, no food or drink, no phone calls, and no toilet or air conditioning inside. Go to the toilet before you start. In summer the halls get warm, and in winter you walk on cold wooden floors in socks, so wear warm ones.

Can you see Nagoya Castle in one hour?

Just about: palace plus the keep exterior. Go straight to the palace from the East Gate, then walk the inner moat back out.

With an hour you get the palace (40 minutes) and a quick look at the keep and walls from the Honmaru. You lose the garden, the museum and the southwest turret view. It works for a stopover between trains; Nagoya Station is about 10 minutes away by subway.

Don't try the one-hour version after 15:00. Leave luggage in a coin locker at the station: the palace lockers take bags, but dragging a suitcase across the grounds is miserable.

Is half a day enough for the castle and something else?

Yes. The castle plus lunch takes about three hours, which leaves the afternoon for Tokugawa-en and the Tokugawa Art Museum, Osu, or the Toyota museum.

The neatest pairing is the Owari Tokugawa theme: the castle in the morning, then Tokugawa-en garden and the Tokugawa Art Museum next door, where the family's own armour, swords and the Tale of Genji scrolls are kept. Key Route Bus 2 links the castle area (Shiyakusho stop) with Tokugawa-en. The castle and Tokugawa-en combination ticket costs 1,040 yen, cash only.

Remember that Tokugawa-en, the Tokugawa Art Museum and the Toyota museum all close on Mondays, and the castle doesn't. Our one-day Nagoya plan has full timings.

How long should I spend in cherry blossom or autumn season?

Add 30 to 60 minutes. About 900 cherry trees bloom in late March and early April, and the garden maples turn in late November.

In blossom season the grounds get crowded and the palace queue grows, so arrive at 9:00 or come for the evening light-up and do the palace another day. The spring festival in 2026 ran from 20 March to 6 May, according to Aichi Now. Our 2027 cherry blossom post tracks the next one.

Autumn is calmer and the Ninomaru Garden is at its best. An extra half-hour for photos there is time well spent.
